Speaker: Ali Hassan

Barry KennedyAt the age of 34, after doing soul-crushing work to satisfy his family and peers, Chef Ali Hassan made a decision for himself - to get up on the comedy stage.  His original goal was to gain confidence and build a personality that he could put on camera as the host of a food show.  Development of the food show continues today, but Ali also fell in love with Stand-Up Comedy.  In 6 short years, Ali has been given the opportunity to perform (twice) at the Amman Stand-Up Comedy Festival (the first comedy festival to ever take place in the Middle East), Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival, and JFL42 in Toronto.

Ali’s comedic versatility has also caught the eyes of movie directors and casting agents.  He has acted in three feature films in the last two years.  He landed the supporting role of Kumar, the hapless Indian restaurant owner in a small Quebec town, in Kevin Tierney’s French Immersion.   He also played Niku, the enforcer on an all-Sikh hockey team, in Breakaway.  And most recently he had the memorable role of Uncle Stevie in a TIFF-favorite, Goon, acting opposite Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel and Eugene Levy.

Most impressively, Ali's comedic hustle has now translated into a new role as "Lead Comedy Panelist" on the new prime-time George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight Show.  He is on CBC Television every weeknight and viewed by over 350000 Canadians a night.
